Abstract

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE “CLADOCERAN” FAUNA (CRUSTACEA, BRANCHIOPODA) FROM LITORAL FLUVIAL ARGENTINO The water bodies belonging to Litoral Fluvial Argentino (northeastern region of Argentina, which includes the largest rivers in the country) are inhabited by a remarkably rich fauna of Cladocera. They are represented by taxa belonging to Anomopoda and Ctenopoda and include all the families, nearly all the genera and two thirds of the species recorded in Argentina. The main threats to this rich fauna are the human activities mainly the construction of dams which have as the most important consequence the loss of habitats, and the pollution because the use of pesticides.
