Ecorregiones de la Sierra de Ancasti (Catamarca, Argentina)

Luego de 40 años de la publicación del esquema fitogeográfico de la Sierra de Ancasti por Vervoorst y Fernández (1983), se propone aquí adaptarlo a un enfoque ecorregional, más abarcativo. Las ecorregiones son áreas extensas con condiciones geomorfológicas, climáticas, ambientales y ecológicas relativamente homogéneas, en las cuales se dan procesos que mantienen la biodiversidad y los servicios ecosistémicos que proporcionan. La Sierra de Ancasti es un cordón montañoso emplazado en el SE de la provincia de Catamarca (Dptos. El Alto y Ancasti), que integra las Sierras Pampeanas. Nuestro objetivo es caracterizar las ecorregiones que abarcan la Sierra de Ancasti. A partir de una revisión bibliográfica y mediante análisis de imágenes satelitales y uso de Sistemas de Información Geográfica (QGIS) se generó un mapa del área basado en el de Ecorregiones de la Argentina de Brown y Pacheco (2006). Así se distinguen las ecorregiones: Yungas (Selva Montana y Pastizales de Neblina) y Chaco Seco (Árido, Semiárido y Serrano) y se describen las mismas. Vervoorst y Fernández (1983) también reconocen un “Bosque Chaqueño Serrano” hacia el E de la sierra, que, en este estudio, es considerado como parte de la ecorregión de Yungas y ecotono con el Chaco Semiárido.
Abstract
ECOREGIONS OF THE SIERRA DE ANCASTI (CATAMARCA, ARGENTINA). After 40 years of the publication of the phytogeographic scheme of the Sierra de Ancasti by Vervoorst & Fernández (1983), it is proposed here to adapt it to a more comprehensive ecoregional approach. Ecoregions are large areas with relatively homogeneous geomorphological, climatic, environmental, and ecological conditions, in which processes occur that maintain biodiversity and the ecosystem services they provide. The Sierra de Ancasti is a mountain range located in the SE of the province of Catamarca (Departments. El Alto and Ancasti), which integrates the Sierras Pampeanas. Our objective is to characterize the ecoregions that comprise the Sierra de Ancasti. From a bibliographic review and through analysis of satellite images and the use of Geographic Information Systems (QGIS), a map of the area was generated based on the Ecoregions of Argentina map by Brown & Pacheco (2006). This is how the ecoregions are distinguished: Yungas (Montana Jungle and Fog Grasslands) and Chaco Seco (Arid, Semi-arid and Serrano) and they are described. Vervoorst & Fernández (1983) also recognize a “Serrano Chaqueño Forest” towards the E of the sierra, which, in this study, is considered as part of the Yungas ecoregion and ecotone with the Semiarid Chaco.
